In a cold and windy Furbo, Rahoon/Newcastle
continued their march in the Under 14 County Championship with a great
win over Barna/Furbo. Rahoon/Newcastle took the field
without some of their top players, due to injury, but the 15 that did
line out played with great hunger and determination. Scores were hard to
come by with the strong westerly wind that was blowing across the pitch,
but Rahoon started the better and did rattle the net with a goal from Paul Griffin mid way
through the first half. Barna/Furbo replied with a point themselves just
before half time.
After the turn around Barna/Furbo came at Rahoon/Newcastle
but the Rahoon/Newcastle defence stood strong, guided by the great
Willie Mackey at full back. In the first 10 minutes of the second half
Barna/Furbo applied all the pressure but only had a point to show for
their efforts. Rahoon were lucky to clear a ball which hit
the upright early in the half but they soaked up the pressure and when
they did
break into the Barna/Furbo half, Vincent Mullins finished off a great
move and blasted the ball into the roof of the net. Rahoon/Newcastle
were now on top and Stephen Fahy added a
point from a free. Barna/Furbo scored their goal just on the stroke of
full time but it was too little too late. In what were very difficult conditions Rahoon/Newcastle stuck
to their task and look like a side that could go a long way in this
championship.
A special note of mention to the backroom team of
Paul Flaherty and Andrew Keane who have prepared this team excellently
and who have enlisted County star Tony Og Regan to aid with the
coaching. His addition to the setup can only have good influence on
these fine hurlers.
